Building a digital growth engine from the ground up

A growing hospitality startup had strong guest experiences but fragmented digital presence. I connected the dots across social media, SEO, influencer marketing, campaign strategy, and website experience to build a cohesive growth ecosystem.

Digital growth strategy — nature hospitality
The Brief

Good product.
Invisible online.

The retreat had strong guest experiences and glowing reviews — but no structured digital presence to match. Social media was early-stage, the website lacked SEO foundations, influencer partnerships were informal, and there was little visibility into how awareness translated into bookings. The goal was to build a scalable, multi-channel growth strategy that connected brand storytelling to actual results.

Outcome

A growth system,
not just a campaign.

01 · Process

How I approached it

1

Audit

Reviewed existing digital presence, content, website, and booking journeys to identify gaps and opportunities.

2

Strategise

Built a phased growth roadmap across social media, SEO, influencer, campaigns, and website experience.

3

Build & Execute

Launched the Instagram presence, designed influencer frameworks, developed campaign concepts, and improved digital touchpoints.

4

Scale

Set up automation tools, email foundations, and content systems so growth could continue without starting from scratch.

What I owned

Growth Strategy

Built a multi-channel growth roadmap connecting social media, SEO, influencer marketing, campaigns, and website experience into a single coherent system.

Content & Social

Developed content pillars, storytelling frameworks, campaign planning, and community engagement strategy. Grew the Instagram account from zero to ~1,500 followers.

Digital Experience & Automation

Conducted SEO research, reviewed booking journeys, and set up automation tools — creating foundations for scalable, repeatable growth.

03 · Challenge

Awareness was not the problem. Discoverability was.

The retreat was well-loved by guests — but invisible to the people who hadn't found it yet. Social media was early-stage, the website wasn't optimised for search, and influencer partnerships were happening without a clear framework. Growth was happening in pockets, not as a system.

Research into guest motivations revealed something important: the retreat's real value wasn't accommodation — it was what it helped guests feel. Rest, connection, a break from the noise. But that story wasn't being told online in a way that matched what people were searching for.

"The brand had a personality that guests loved. The challenge was making sure the people who needed it could actually find it."

The opportunity was to build a growth strategy rooted in the retreat's genuine identity — not generic hospitality marketing — and turn that into something scalable and sustainable.

Digital growth strategy challenge

Three levers for sustainable growth

Pillar 01
◎

Visibility

Social media, influencer marketing, and campaign storytelling to reach the right audience — people searching for rest, nature, and reconnection.

Pillar 02
◈

Discoverability

SEO strategy, website content improvements, and keyword alignment so the retreat appeared for the searches that actually mattered — wellness travel, nature retreats, digital detox.

Pillar 03
◇

Conversion

Improved booking journey clarity, email automation foundations, and quiz-based personalisation to reduce friction and turn interest into bookings.

From fragmented channels to a growth system

Each piece was designed to connect to the others — so growth in one area would support growth in all the others.

01
Social Media Growth

Built the Instagram presence from the ground up

Developed content pillars, storytelling frameworks, seasonal campaigns, and community engagement strategy. The account grew from zero to ~1,500 followers while significantly increasing reach and visibility.

◎

Content Pillars

Structured content categories around rest, nature, guest stories, and behind-the-scenes moments — giving the feed a clear identity.

◈

Storytelling Framework

Shifted messaging from "accommodation" to how guests want to feel — rest, connection, being present in nature.

◇

Seasonal Campaigns

Planned content around the seasonal rhythm of the retreat — ensuring relevance and variety throughout the year.

◉

Community Engagement

Developed engagement strategies to build a community of followers who genuinely cared about the brand's values.

02
Influencer Program

Designed an influencer framework built on trust

Focused on Scandinavian nature creators, slow-living storytellers, and wellness travel voices rather than high-follower generalists. Built a creator selection framework, briefing structure, and evaluation criteria.

⊙

Creator Selection Criteria

Defined who the right influencers were — not the biggest, but the most aligned with the retreat's values and guest profile.

⊟

Briefing Structure

Created briefing templates and content direction guidelines that gave creators creative freedom within a clear brand framework.

⊞

Stay Experience Design

Designed influencer stay concepts to ensure the content created was authentic and genuinely reflected the guest experience.

⊗

Evaluation Framework

Defined goals and metrics beyond follower count — engagement quality, audience alignment, and booking intent signals.

03
SEO & Website Strategy

Made the retreat easier to find for the right people

Conducted keyword research around nature retreats, wellness travel, digital detox, and location-based searches. Reviewed website content and booking journeys to identify friction and conversion opportunities.

◎

Keyword Research

Identified high-intent search terms around wellness travel, nervous system retreats, and nature-based experiences.

◈

Content Opportunities

Mapped content gaps between what guests searched for and what the website answered — creating a roadmap for SEO-led content.

◇

Booking Journey Review

Identified friction points between social/search traffic and the booking flow — recommending improvements to reduce drop-off.

◉

Website Improvements

Recommended structural and content changes to improve trust, clarity, and conversion across key pages.

04
Wellness Positioning

Opened a new lane: rest as a retreat category

Identified an opportunity to position the retreat beyond cabin stays — into the emerging space of nervous system recovery, digital detox, and nature-based wellbeing. This reframing connected the retreat's existing strengths to a growing audience need.

⊙

Nervous System Retreats

Framed the retreat as a space for stress regulation and nervous system recovery — connecting nature immersion to a growing mental wellness conversation.

⊟

Digital Detox Positioning

Positioned disconnecting from screens as a feature, not just a side effect of staying in nature — targeting a specific, high-intent audience.

⊞

Creative Reset Weekends

Developed a concept for creative professionals who needed structured downtime — broadening the audience beyond couples and nature enthusiasts.

⊗

Nature-Based Recovery

Created messaging frameworks around the science of nature and recovery — giving the brand credibility and depth beyond "beautiful scenery."

05
Automation & Tools

Set up the infrastructure for scalable growth

Built the foundations for email marketing, booking automation, and data capture — so the team could manage and grow the guest relationship without manual effort at every step.

◎

Zapier Automation

Set up automation workflows to connect booking data, email lists, and communication triggers — reducing manual tasks and improving response speed.

◈

Klaviyo Email Setup

Built email marketing foundations including audience segmentation, flow structure, and pre-arrival/post-stay communication sequences.

◇

Booking Quiz

Developed a quiz concept to personalise the booking experience — helping guests find the right stay and helping the brand understand guest intent.

◉

AI-Assisted Marketing

Explored how AI tools could support content creation, personalisation, and campaign iteration — building efficiency into the growth process.

07 · Reflection

What this project taught me

The biggest lesson was that growth rarely comes from a single channel. A good Instagram post doesn't convert if the website creates friction. SEO traffic doesn't stick if there's nothing to email people after they visit. The channels only work when they support each other.

"Sustainable growth happens when customer understanding, storytelling, and digital execution work as one system — not as separate campaigns."

The second insight was about positioning. The retreat didn't need to reach more people — it needed to reach the right people, and speak to them in a language that actually resonated. Shifting the message from "a place to stay" to "a place to recover" opened an entirely different conversation.

Growth strategy, when done well, is really customer understanding applied to digital channels. The tools are secondary. The insight is the strategy.
